Trucking Insurance Information
Owners and operators of commercial trucks can't get by with a standard commercial auto policy. In addition to protecting the cargo they carry, truckers must consider the massive physical damage that can be caused by their trucks, the potential environmental issues an accident could cause, and the expensive cost to repair their large vehicles.
Liability Insurance
Trucking liability insurance provides protection against your legal liability for injury and/or property damage caused by your negligence, your employees or contract drivers in the use of your insured vehicles. Owner Operators and Motor Carriers that operate under their own authority are required by law to carry primary liability on all owned power units and leased vehicles.
- Bodily Injury Liability Coverage (BI): If you, your employees or contract drivers are responsible for causing an accident, Bodily Injury Liability coverage pays for injuries/death to people involved in the accident. BI coverage also pays for legal defense if you are sued.
- Property Damage Liability Coverage (PD): If the insured person is legally liability for an accident, this coverage pays for damage to other people's property resulting from the accident. If the insured is sued, Property Damage Liability also pays for legal defense costs.
- Michigan No-fault Coverages (PIP and PPI):
- Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Coverage: PIP is the coverage with which the insurance company pays the medical, hospital and funeral expenses of the injured person, people in the insured vehicle and pedestrians struck by the insured vehicle. PIP also covers a portion of wages lost as a result of the accident.
- Property Protection Insurance (PPI): PPI pays up to $1,000,000 for damage to property arising from the ownership, operation or maintenance of an insured vehicle within the state of Michigan.
Trucker Liability Compliance
Federal filing 91X is required by the Federal Transportation Safety Administration to assure compliance with statutory liability limits of $750,000, $1,000,000, or $5,000,000 depending on your business operations and what you carry.
Cargo Insurance
Your customers rely on you to safely deliver their goods in the same condition they were in when they turned them over to you. Damage to customer goods is not covered by the vehicle's liability insurance, physical damage insurance, or general liability insurance. Cargo insurance covers your customers' goods while being transported and in your care. Cargo insurance comes in different forms and can be set up to properly cover different types of cargo.
Bobtail / Non-Trucking / Deadhead Insurance
If you are an Owner-Operator operating under a long-term lease, you may need this form of insurance to provide your liability insurance while you are without cargo, not operating under dispatch, using the vehicle for personal uses, or pulling an empty trailer.
Physical Damage Insurance
Physical damage insurance covers your vehicles - power units and trailers alike - against loss arising from a collision or other than a collision, such as fire, theft, vandalism, etc.
Environmental Liability Insurance
If your truck carries cargo that can be environmentally toxic or could contribute to pollution, you need special insurance to help pay for the cost of cleanup if it should be spilled in an accident. Environmental liability insurance will cover this expense as long as it occurs in a qualifying situation.
