According to the US Department of Labor, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on September 5, 1882 with a parade in New York City in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union.  In 1884, the first Monday of September was selected as the official holiday and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a "workingmen's holiday" by recognizing the labor force on that date.  The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.

Labor Day in Michigan tends to mark the end of summer and the beginning of fall and the new school year for students.  It is also a time of parades, fairs, festivals and other events all across the state including the Michigan State Fair (Novi), the Michigan Peach Festival (Romeo), the Detroit Jazz Festival (Detroit), the Mackinac Bridge Walk (Mackinac), and many, many more!

Whether you are planning weekend a trip, a day at a Labor Day event, or just kicking back at home, the staff at Insurance Planning Service wish you a meaningful, fun-filled and safe Labor Day holiday!

By the way, our office will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2014 in observance of Labor Day!
